Netherlands to improve Blankenburgtunnel digital toll signage

Dutch Minister of Infrastructure Vincent Karremans has announced improvements to the information signage for the digital toll system on the A24 Blankenburgverbinding near Vlaardingen. The changes, which aim to make the system more understandable and accessible, include more striking colors and simplified, clarified messaging. These updates are expected to be completed by early next year.

The decision follows a request from Ombudsman Reinier van Zutphen, who reported numerous complaints regarding the lack of transparency and complexity of the digital system. While the Ombudsman advocated for a paper-based payment alternative, Minister Karremans stated that physical toll booths are not feasible for the A24. The current system uses cameras to register license plates, allowing for automatic deductions or online payments within 72 hours.

Dispute remains regarding administrative costs. The Ombudsman criticized the 9 euro fee charged for payment reminders, noting it is disproportionate to the 1.57 euro toll. However, the Minister declined to reduce this fee, stating it is necessary to cover the costs of processing and sending reminders.
