Netherlands to Introduce Heavy‑Vehicle Toll on July 1 2026, Motorhomes Exempt

From 1 July 2026 the Netherlands will launch the "Vrachtwagenheffing", a distance‑based toll for commercial trucks weighing over 3.5 tonnes. The system replaces the existing eurovignette, which will be discontinued on 30 June 2026. Under the new regime, fees vary with vehicle weight, emissions class and kilometres travelled, encouraging lighter, cleaner fleets.

Motorhomes are explicitly excluded from the toll, even if their total weight exceeds 3.5 tonnes. As Julian Schmelzer, co‑founder of mobility‑startup maut1.de, explained: "We can clearly give reassurance: motorhomes do not fall under the new truck toll in the Netherlands, even if they have a permissible total weight over 3.5 tonnes." The ADAC and Dutch authorities advise foreign motorhome owners to register their vehicles on the Vrachtwagenheffing website to avoid recognition issues. The change affects Dutch heavy‑goods transport operators and foreign tourists, particularly from Germany, who use Dutch camping sites.
