Netherlands to reduce regulatory burden for zoos

Dutch State Secretary Silvio Erkens has announced plans to reduce regulatory pressure on the country's zoos to allow for more innovation and adaptation to societal expectations. The government is currently working on a multi-year revision of zoo legislation.

During a meeting at Ouwehands Dierenpark with sector directors and representatives from the Netherlands Association of Zoos, the discussion focused on regulatory burden, population management, and nature conservation. The ministry noted that the current permit system can hinder progress, as parks that do not change are not reassessed, while those seeking to improve enclosures or methods often face complex regulations.

The planned revision aims to allow for the reassessment of outdated permits and will address topics such as animal presentations, visitor contact with wild animals, and the management of surplus animals.
