Netherlands to reopen Energy Relief Fund for 500,000 households

The Dutch cabinet has earmarked €193 million to restart the Energy Relief Fund in the autumn of 2026. The fund aims to support roughly half a million households that face high energy costs relative to their income. Eligibility requires a gross household income of up to 130 % of the social minimum with an energy bill of at least 8 % of that income, or an income between 130 % and 200 % of the social minimum with a bill of at least 10 % of income. The social minimum for 2026 is €1,790 for single adults and €2,500 for co‑habitants. Applicants receive a reimbursement equal to half of the portion of their energy bill that exceeds the applicable 8 % or 10 % threshold. The application process will be conducted through the official website and will require recent income documentation, the latest energy bill and a DigiD login. Authorities warn against fraud attempts that promise direct cash payouts via unsolicited messages.

The fund will operate for at least four months, with the exact opening date to be announced closer to September 2026.
