Netherlands traffic fines increase as red-light violations surge

Traffic violation data from the first eight months of 2026 shows an 11% increase in nationwide flash fines in the Netherlands, totaling over 2 million offenses. While speeding remains the primary cause of fines, accounting for 94% of all violations, red-light infractions are the fastest-growing category, increasing by 39% nationally.

Regional trends vary significantly across provinces. In Noord-Brabant, red-light violations more than doubled, rising from 5,884 to 12,088. Zeeland saw a 29% increase in red-light fines despite a stable total number of violations. Noord-Holland experienced a 13% rise in total fines, driven largely by a single location on Spaklerweg in Amsterdam. Conversely, Overijssel reported a 14% decrease in total violations compared to the previous year.

Flexible speed cameras, which are mobile units moved to high-offense areas, accounted for over 545,000 fines during this period, representing more than a quarter of the total recorded offenses.
