Netherlands water-themed cultural events scheduled in Zwijndrecht, Weert, and Meerstad
Several maritime and water-related cultural events are scheduled across the Netherlands.
In Zwijndrecht, the fourth edition of Binnenvaartdagen will take place from September 11 to 13. The free event aims to introduce the public to the inland shipping industry through ship visits, including tankers and tugboats, as well as educational activities and simulators. The program includes school visits, live music, and extreme activities like a 60-meter bungee jump.
Weert is preparing to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Zuid-Willemsvaart on September 12, 2026, with the ‘Weert aan het water’ event. The festivities will feature flyboard shows, water sports demonstrations, and activities by local diving and rowing clubs. The Weert Fire Department will also demonstrate search and rescue techniques using a specialized diving tank.
Additionally, the annual Watersportdag at Meerstad will feature a dragon boat race on August 30. This year's race involves sixteen teams competing in a format where four boats race simultaneously, highlighting the teamwork required to maneuver the heavy wooden vessels.
