Netherlands: Winter home safety and energy efficiency tips
As winter approaches, residents in the Netherlands are advised to take several safety and efficiency measures regarding their homes. Fire departments recommend having chimneys cleaned by professionals and ensuring central heating systems are inspected by certified installers to prevent hazards.
Electrical safety is also a priority. With the increasing number of connected devices like solar panels, heat pumps, and home batteries, residents are encouraged to have their electrical installations and fuse boxes checked. It is specifically advised to keep fuse boxes clear of clutter to ensure quick access to main switches during emergencies. Additionally, smoke detectors should be installed on every floor, a requirement since 2022.
To combat high energy costs, improving home insulation is highlighted as a key way to reduce gas consumption. In the municipality of Dalfsen, homeowners with poorly insulated houses can apply for local insulation subsidies, which can cover 10 percent of costs for one measure or 25 percent for two, up to a maximum of €1,460. These local grants can be combined with the national ISDE subsidy.
