Netherlands women's football team seeks to boost declining stadium attendance
The Netherlands women's national football team is preparing for a crucial World Cup qualification play-off match against Hungary. Following a significant 8-0 victory, the team is focused on securing a spot in the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
Players have expressed concerns regarding a decline in stadium attendance. Lynn Wilms noted that while the team enjoyed massive crowds during their peak years between 2017 and 2019, recent matches have seen significantly lower turnout. For instance, a recent match against France drew only 6,500 fans, and a match against Ireland left over 10,000 seats empty in Utrecht.
Coach Arjan Veurink emphasized the importance of supporters, stating that football is ultimately played for the fans and that their presence serves as motivation for the team to perform well.
