FC Groningen defeats Excelsior 5-1 in Eredivisie match
FC Groningen secured a dominant 5-1 away victory against Excelsior in their Eredivisie return following the international break. The match, held at Stadion Woudestein, saw Groningen climb to sixth place in the standings.
Marco Rente opened the scoring early following a defensive error by Excelsior captain Casper Widell. Although Irakli Yegoian equalized for the hosts via a penalty, Groningen quickly regained the lead after a blunder by Excelsior goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel, who inadvertently scored an own goal from a Tika de Jonge cross.
The second half saw Groningen extend their lead through a second penalty converted by Thom van Bergen, followed by a goal from Brynjólfur Darri Willumsson and a final strike by Rente.
The match was marked by significant officiating controversy. Referee Richard Martens faced heavy criticism on social media for awarding two highly debated penalties to Groningen. Additionally, communication issues between the referee and the VAR prevented a standard review of the second penalty incident.
