Network Rail announces major infrastructure upgrade programmes
Network Rail has announced several major infrastructure investment programmes across the United Kingdom to improve railway reliability and resilience.
A £7.1 million upgrade programme is scheduled to begin on the East Coast Main Line, connecting Newcastle and Scotland. The works, spanning three consecutive weekends starting September 19, include track renewal, upgrades to switches and crossings, drainage improvements, and the renewal of overhead line equipment. Additionally, £4.6 million will be invested in the line between North Berwick and Dunbar in Scotland.
In Liverpool, a £3.5 million programme will commence next month to strengthen and waterproof four underground tunnels on the Merseyrail network. This 26-day project includes renewing systems used to isolate and control the electrified third rail. The Merseyrail Northern Line between Hunts Cross and Liverpool Central will face closures from October 11 to November 6, with replacement bus services provided during this period.
