Network Rail completes £6.95m East Midlands railway upgrades

Network Rail has completed a £6.95 million infrastructure improvement programme across the East Midlands, targeting Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Leicestershire. The upgrades, conducted over two weekends in August, were designed to enhance railway reliability, improve performance, and increase resilience against flooding.

Key components of the project included the renewal of 583 metres of track in Ashwell, Rutland, and drainage improvements at Alfreton, Derbyshire, and Kirby Bellars, Leicestershire. Additionally, work involved renewing points at Blackwell South Junction and refurbishing seven sets of points at Trowell Junction. These efforts build upon previous work, such as the recent renewal of track through the Alfreton Tunnel, to strengthen the rail link between Sheffield and Nottingham.
