Network Rail completes half of £3.5m Merseyrail tunnel upgrades

Network Rail has reached the halfway point of a £3.5 million project to upgrade and waterproof four Victorian-era tunnels on Liverpool’s Merseyrail network. The work involves strengthening the infrastructure to improve long-term reliability and reduce the risk of water ingress.

A team of over 50 workers has already removed 92m² of old concrete, drilled 6,400 holes for waterproofing injections, and waterproofed 1,672m² of tunnel walls. Additionally, power control systems are being modernized across both Merseyrail lines during scheduled closures.

The Northern Line remains closed between Hunts Cross and Liverpool Central. Rail replacement buses are currently in operation to assist passengers. Normal train services are expected to resume on the morning of Saturday, 7 November.
