Network Rail invests £8m in Dalwhinnie accessibility upgrades

An £8 million investment is underway to improve passenger accessibility and rail reliability at Dalwhinnie on Scotland’s Highland Main Line. The project involves installing a new crossover, which will allow northbound services to access Platform 1 to provide step-free access for passengers requiring it.

In addition to the crossover, engineers will renew approximately 400 yards of track and replace aging signaling equipment with modern color light signals. These upgrades are intended to increase operational flexibility for both passenger and freight services, improve resilience, and allow trains to travel at higher speeds through the area.

To facilitate the installation and commissioning of the new infrastructure, the line through Dalwhinnie will close from Friday, October 30 to Monday, November 2, and again from Friday, November 6 to Monday, November 9. Work will continue during nights and weekends through the end of the year to remove redundant equipment.
