Network Rail launches major track renewal projects across England

Network Rail is carrying out extensive infrastructure upgrades at two sites in England. At the historic Chipping Sodbury tunnel north of Bristol, a four‑week, 24‑hour programme is midway through installing more than 2,000 soil nails, protective netting and drainage improvements to reduce landslide risk. The works also involve replacing over 2.7 km of track, brickwork repairs inside the 120‑year‑old tunnel and the use of AI‑driven monitoring platforms.

Separately, on the Crouch Valley line in Essex, Network Rail will replace ageing rails and sleepers between Battlesbridge and Southminster during a seven‑day closure from 22 August to 28 August 2026. The project includes bridge and signalling inspections, drainage upgrades, vegetation clearance, buffer‑stop replacement, platform repairs and the provision of replacement bus services.

Both projects aim to improve safety, reliability and resilience of the rail network.
