Network Rail removes Oxhey Grange footbridge near Watford

Network Rail has completed the emergency removal of the Oxhey Grange footbridge near Watford following the discovery of significant structural deterioration. To ensure the safety of passengers, workers, and the local community, engineers utilized a specialist 1,200-tonne heavy-lift crane to dismantle and lift the structure out in a single operation.

The complex operation was carried out through the night to minimize disruption on the West Coast Main Line, one of the UK’s busiest railways. While services between Watford Junction and London Euston were initially scheduled to be cancelled until 4:00 PM on Sunday, September 21, the line was able to reopen earlier than planned.

Local residents have expressed concerns regarding the removal, noting the bridge is vital for schoolchildren, the elderly, and pedestrians. Network Rail has stated it will replace the bridge “as soon as reasonably practicable,” though a specific date for the new construction has not yet been provided.
