Network Rail upgrades UK lines for flood resilience and digital signalling

Network Rail is carrying out extensive engineering works across the United Kingdom to improve railway reliability and protect against flooding. In North Wales and the Borders, lines between Bidston and Wrexham General are closed from 16 August to 30 August while drainage upgrades, a new automated trash screen at Gobowen and repairs to the Hawarden Swing Bridge are completed. Route Director Nick Millington said the work is a "significant investment" that will deliver long‑term benefits for passengers and freight.

In the East Midlands, £5.46 million of upgrades are scheduled for two weekends in August, including drainage renewal at Alfreton, point refurbishments at Blackwell South Junction and Trowell Junction, and further testing ahead of the £1.4 billion East Coast Digital Programme. Operations Director Eric Larocque highlighted that the upgrades will "help make the railway more reliable" and reduce flood‑related delays. Digital in‑cab signalling is being trialled on the East Coast Main Line, aiming for greener, safer journeys.

Both programmes aim to minimise future disruptions, enhance safety and support more reliable passenger and freight services across the network.
