Netzwerk Kinderrechte Schweiz urges national child poverty strategy

Netzwerk Kinderrechte Schweiz is calling for a comprehensive national strategy to combat child poverty, arguing that current support is a fragmented “patchwork” of cantonal policies. Data indicates that 114,000 children in Switzerland are currently affected by poverty, while an additional 315,000 minors—nearly one in five children—are at risk of financial hardship.

The Federal Statistical Office reported that nearly five percent of children under age 16 experienced financial deprivation across multiple key life areas in 2024. Vulnerability is highest among children in single-parent households and large families. Advocates note that economic instability impacts education, health, development, and social participation.

The organization is demanding binding federal targets, systematic progress monitoring, and a dedicated child-specific dimension within the National Poverty Monitoring framework. They also propose nationwide minimum standards for family allowances to ensure equitable support regardless of a child's canton of residence. This push follows criticism regarding the slow implementation of recommendations from the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child.
