Neuburg tests pedestrian zone to revitalize city center

Neuburg has initiated a trial period for a pedestrian zone to increase the attractiveness of its city center for visitors. Following two test weekends in September, local officials and stakeholders have proposed a longer trial period for 2027.

Pending city council approval, the proposed model would implement the pedestrian zone every Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00 between May and October. The initiative has sparked intense debate among local merchants and residents, who hold differing views on the impact of traffic restrictions.

This local effort follows trends in neighboring Bavarian cities, such as Donauwörth, which has implemented traffic-calming measures and market zones to combat commercial vacancies and revitalize urban spaces.
