Neukölln officials address Islamism and antisemitism policies

Political tensions are rising in the Berlin district of Neukölln regarding the influence of political Islam and the handling of antisemitism. Martin Hikel, the SPD district mayor, has criticized his own party, alleging that the SPD is attempting to integrate Islamism rather than combat it. Hikel stated that this approach facilitates a societal infiltration by orthodox Islam and noted increasing social pressure on Muslims who do not adhere to orthodox views, particularly in schools.

In a separate move, Neukölln Social Councilor Hannes Rehfeldt (CDU) has implemented a policy to withhold public funding from social projects that violate antisemitism standards. Under this new measure, 24 organizations receiving a total of 5.13 million euros in funding for services such as drug aid and homeless support must adhere to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. This includes prohibiting comparisons between Israeli policy and Nazi policies. While Rehfeldt argues that public funds must support constitutional values, critics from the Left and Green parties have characterized the move as an attempt to silence criticism of Israeli military actions.
