Neuquén agricultural projects test local food production
In the Neuquén province of Argentina, scientific and agricultural initiatives are underway to enhance local food production and reduce dependence on distant supply chains. In Paso Aguerre, a project led by ANIDE, INTA, and CONICET is testing various maize varieties to determine which hybrids best adapt to local conditions for silage production. This pilot program aims to supply the local agricultural cooperative's food plant with locally grown grains.
Simultaneously, in the Patagonian steppe at the INTA Pilcaniyeu Annex Field, an interdisciplinary team is developing an agroecological garden. The project seeks to diversify production in areas dominated by extensive livestock farming by overcoming extreme climate challenges, such as frost, wind, and water scarcity. Researchers are utilizing specialized technologies, including an Andean-style adobe greenhouse designed to act as a thermal buffer, to cultivate fresh vegetables in harsh environments.
