Neuquén celebrates 60 years of higher education history

The history of higher education in Neuquén is marked by the 1964 creation of the Universidad Provincial del Neuquén. Sanctioned under Governor Felipe Sapag via Law 414, the institution aimed to provide local opportunities for students and prevent the need for migration to other provinces.

The university began its first academic cycle on April 1, 1965. Key early developments included the Faculty of Engineering, which operated in the oil regions of Cutral Có and Plaza Huincul with support from YPF. Dr. Ricardo Oliva served as the first rector, while Armando París led the engineering faculty.

In 1972, the institution was nationalized, becoming part of the Universidad Nacional del Comahue. Current discussions regarding the region's development focus on leveraging the growth of Vaca Muerta, improving infrastructure, and strengthening connections with Chile through the bioceanic corridor.
