Neuquén declares meteorological emergency amid heavy rains
Governor Rolando Figueroa has declared a six-month meteorological emergency in Neuquén province due to intense rainfall associated with the El Niño phenomenon. The measure follows reports of collapsing drainage infrastructure and the risk of rising river levels. To manage the situation, the provincial government has established a committee to coordinate preventive actions and emergency responses.
In addition to climate response, the administration announced a massive infrastructure plan for Neuquén capital, exceeding 287 billion pesos (approximately 200 million USD) for drinking water and sanitation services. This investment aims to address urban growth through 2040, including the expansion of treatment plants and new aqueducts.
Regarding energy costs, the province has launched the 'Tarifa Neuquina' program, offering residential users of the Ente Provincial de Energía (EPEN) a 30% discount on electricity bills. This initiative was made possible through the renegotiation of hydroelectric royalties, allowing the province to redistribute these funds as subsidies to local consumers.
