Neuquén reports 85% increase in pediatric RSV consultations

The Ministry of Health in Neuquén, Argentina, has reported a significant surge in pediatric medical consultations due to the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Over the last four weeks, outpatient pediatric visits related to RSV have increased by 85%.

Data shows a steady upward trend in cases. In the week of August 23 to 29, there were 3,659 pediatric consultations, with 2,920 specifically linked to RSV-related respiratory illnesses. This follows a previous peak in respiratory diseases driven primarily by influenza.

RSV is highly contagious and spreads through respiratory secretions or contact with contaminated surfaces. While often causing mild symptoms in adults, it poses severe risks to infants and children under 12 months, potentially leading to bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and long-term issues such as asthma.
