Neuralink's Blindsight vision implant slated for human trials within 12 months
Elon Musk announced that Neuralink intends to start the first human implants of its Blindsight visual prosthesis within the next six to twelve months, targeting 2026. The device bypasses damaged eyes and optic nerves by delivering electrical signals directly to the brain's visual cortex, aiming to give users low‑resolution sight initially, comparable to early video‑game graphics.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted Blindsight a Breakthrough (Innovative) Device designation, which speeds regulatory review but does not constitute full market approval. Neuralink says later versions could provide high‑resolution, multispectral vision, potentially detecting infrared, ultraviolet and radar‑like signals. The company also notes its separate Telepathy implant, already placed in a patient in early 2024, as part of its broader neurotechnology program.
