Neurological discomforts: Causes of hand tingling and restless legs syndrome

Medical experts are highlighting the causes and symptoms of various neurological sensations, such as tingling in the hands and restless legs syndrome.

Tingling in the hands, often referred to as paresthesia, can result from nerve compression or inflammation. Common causes include carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve compression, and cervical radiculopathy. Other contributing factors include diabetes mellitus, vitamin B12 deficiency, circulatory disorders like Raynaud's phenomenon, and certain long-term medications. Medical consultation is advised if tingling is frequent, occurs at night, or is accompanied by dizziness and loss of strength.

Restless legs syndrome, also known as Ekbom syndrome, affects between 5% and 10% of the population. It is characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs, often accompanied by sensations of tingling, pain, or crawling. Symptoms typically emerge during rest and at night, which can significantly disrupt sleep patterns. Movement often provides temporary relief from the discomfort.
