Neurologists advocate for role in CAR-T cell therapy management
At the XLVIII Annual Meeting of the Andalusian Society of Neurology (SAN) in Málaga, specialists called for neurologists to be integrated into multidisciplinary teams from the start of CAR-T cell therapy administration. This involvement is deemed essential to detect and treat neurological complications associated with these treatments.
CAR-T therapies involve genetically modifying a patient's own T lymphocytes to attack diseased cells. While they have transformed the treatment of hematological cancers such as lymphomas, leukemias, and multiple myeloma, their use is expanding to solid tumors like glioblastoma and autoimmune diseases.
Key neurological complications discussed include Immune Effector Cell-Associated Neurotoxicity Syndrome (ICANS), which can cause language alterations, cognitive impairment, decreased consciousness, motor weakness, seizures, and cerebral edema. Other observed effects include movement disorders, parkinsonism, and cranial nerve involvement. In the CARTITUDE-1 trial, 6% of patients treated with ciltacabtagene autoleucel developed parkinsonism.
