Neuroscience expert explains memory storage and forgetting

Neuroscientist Professor Lukas Kunz from the University Hospital Bonn and the University of Bonn explains the mechanisms of memory storage and retrieval. He notes that memories are formed through the activation of nerve cells and the strengthening of synaptic connections. The hippocampus plays a critical role in linking various components of an experience, such as location and participants.

Kunz discusses why forgetting occurs, citing factors such as insufficient attention during initial encoding or the interference of similar information. He suggests that forgetting can be a functional process that reduces competition from irrelevant or outdated information, thereby aiding cognitive efficiency.
