Neuroscience of Love Shows Brain Reward System Activation
Neuroscientists have found that falling in love triggers the brain's reward circuitry, the same network that governs motivation, pleasure and desire. The neurotransmitter dopamine rises, creating feelings of excitement, euphoria and a strong urge to be near the loved one.
The early stage of love also boosts adrenaline and noradrenaline, producing classic symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, sweaty palms, dilated pupils and the “butterflies” sensation in the stomach. As the relationship deepens, oxytocin – often called the “cuddle hormone” – is released during physical contact, fostering trust, emotional bonding and a sense of security. Together with vasopressin, these chemicals help sustain long‑term partnerships and may lower stress hormone cortisol levels when the relationship is supportive.
