Neuroscience research advances in receptor kinetics and brain-machine interfaces

Researchers are making significant strides in understanding and interacting with neural systems. A study led by Dr. Mehdi Borjkhani at the International Centre for Eye Research (ICTER), part of the Polish Academy of Sciences, utilized computer modeling to demonstrate how the timing of NMDA receptor closure affects neuronal stability. The research, published in ‘Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience’, indicates that both excessively fast and slow receptor deactivation can disrupt information flow through distinct mechanisms, potentially leading to chaotic neuronal firing.

In a separate development, Dr. Karolina Cysewska from the Gdańsk University of Technology has received 4 million PLN from the Foundation for Polish Science to advance the NEURO-FIT project. The initiative aims to develop bioadaptable microelectrodes using conductive PEDOT hydrogels and 3D bioprinting. These electrodes are designed to create a soft interface that better integrates with brain tissue, facilitating more effective recording of neural signals and deep brain stimulation.
