Neuroscience research examines TikTok's impact on concentration
Researchers at the Institute of Cognitive and Translational Neuroscience (INCyT)—a collaboration involving Conicet, the INECO Foundation, and Favaloro University—are conducting experiments to understand how short-form video consumption affects attention and memory.
Using high-density electroencephalography (EEG), researchers observed volunteers performing reading tasks while alternating between continuous reading and interruptions by short videos, such as those found on TikTok. The study aims to test the hypothesis that exposure to these digital interruptions negatively impacts the ability to concentrate and retain information.
While the local experiments serve as illustrative models for scientific inquiry, international studies involving nearly 100,000 people have already suggested a correlation between intensive short-video consumption and difficulties in maintaining attention.
