Neuroscience research reveals biological aging mechanisms and cognitive benefits of multilingualism
Recent scientific studies have provided new insights into the biological mechanisms of brain aging and development. Researchers at Harvard University and other institutions published findings in the journal Nature regarding brain organoids. These laboratory-grown, three-dimensional clusters of human stem cells were maintained for over five years, demonstrating that they accumulate molecular changes that accurately reflect biological time. The study suggests these organoids possess a form of biological age memory that influences the types of neurons they subsequently produce.
In a separate study led by Dr. Lucia Amoruso at the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language, researchers investigated the impact of multilingualism on cognitive health. Using magnetoencephalography and artificial intelligence to analyze brain connectivity patterns, the study found a direct correlation between the number of languages spoken and a younger brain age.
According to the research, bilingual individuals showed brain connectivity patterns approximately 6 years younger than monolinguals, while trilingual speakers appeared 7 years younger. Those fluent in four languages exhibited a brain age up to 13 years younger than their chronological age. The findings suggest that linguistic experience provides significant cognitive protection against the natural degradation of neural connections associated with aging.
