Neuroscience research challenges traditional multitasking myths
Recent neurological research is challenging long-held beliefs regarding the human brain's ability to manage multiple tasks and decisions simultaneously.
A study published in the journal Nature, led by specialists at Baylor College of Medicine, suggests the brain does not operate on an “all or nothing” logic. Instead, it can maintain and combine various movement plans at once. Using a virtual reality environment, researchers observed that subjects maintained divided attention between two simultaneous goals for significant periods. The study identified key roles for specific brain regions: the hippocampus for plan updates, the left anterior cingulate cortex for signaling strategy changes, and the orbitofrontal cortex for task evaluation.
Complementary research published in the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience by Georgetown University researchers indicates that the brain possesses an adaptive mechanism to manage multiple activities through continuous training. While traditional neuroscience suggested multitasking is merely rapid task-switching that leads to errors, this study found that repeated practice allows the brain to transfer tasks to secondary regions. This automation frees up cognitive resources in primary areas, enabling the management of parallel activities, similar to the way humans can walk and talk simultaneously.
