Neuroscience research reveals how aging and sleep affect memory

Recent scientific studies have provided new insights into how the human brain processes and preserves memories through aging and sleep.

Research from the University of East Anglia indicates that aging shifts the nature of autobiographical memories. Rather than losing information entirely, older adults tend to retain a broader context while losing specific details. Professor Louis Renoult noted that this is due to changes in how the brain retrieves information, making it harder for seniors to recall repetitive daily routines compared to significant singular events, such as birthdays.

In a separate study published in ‘PLOS Biology’, international researchers identified how the brain selects which new information to consolidate during sleep. By monitoring EEG activity in young adults, scientists found that theta band oscillations (3–8 Hz) during the initial learning phase can predict which memories will be strengthened during sleep. This mechanism helps prevent cognitive overload by filtering which traces are prioritized for long-term retention.
