Neuroscience research transforms chronic pain treatment

Scientific understanding of pain has undergone a radical transformation over the last thirty years, shifting from a simple signal mechanism to a complex, plastic system. Research has revealed that in chronic pain patients, the central nervous system can undergo functional and structural changes known as central sensitization. This process causes the brain to amplify pain signals, effectively learning to reproduce pain even in the absence of an original peripheral trigger.

These findings suggest that treating only the peripheral cause of pain, such as inflammation or nerve damage, is often insufficient if central sensitization has occurred. Consequently, effective therapies must target the central nervous system. Additionally, research documented by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità highlights the role of the endocannabinoid system—a network of receptors and signaling molecules that modulates pain, inflammation, mood, and sleep.
