Neurosurgeon Pablo Rubino defends doctor Leopoldo Luque in Maradona death trial

In a courtroom in San Isidro, Buenos Aires, neuro‑surgeon Pablo Rubino testified in the criminal trial examining the death of former football star Diego Maradona. Rubino supported Leopoldo Luque, Maradona’s primary physician and main accused, arguing that the subdural hematoma—measuring 14 mm—required surgical evacuation, as any hematoma over 10 mm does. He described the November 3 2020 operation at Clínica Olivos as "calm" and successful, with no hemodynamic or neurological complications, and said Luque gave the operative instructions.

Rubino also noted that the surgery was reasonable despite opposition from other specialists. Psychiatrist Marcela Waisman, who consulted with Maradona’s regular psychiatrist, also testified, affirming the treatment decisions. The trial follows a previous hearing annulled in May 2025 after a judge’s misconduct. Dozens of medical staff, including other doctors, psychologists and nurses, face charges related to Maradona’s death.
