Medical experts warn of pediatric muscle diseases and sedentary lifestyle risks
Medical experts are highlighting two major health risks facing children and adolescents: Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and musculoskeletal issues caused by sedentary lifestyles.
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ağırman from Medipol Mega University Hospital noted that DMD, a genetic muscle disease, often shows symptoms in boys between ages 2 and 6. Early warning signs include difficulty running, climbing stairs, or rising from a seated position. Ağırman emphasized that DMD is a holistic disease that can affect the heart, respiratory system, and bones, requiring multidisciplinary care. In Turkey, approximately 150 boys are born with DMD annually.
Separately, Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen warned that increased screen time and lack of physical activity are leading to a rise in neck and back herniations among young people. He explained that prolonged inactivity during childhood prevents proper muscle and joint development, leaving the body unable to handle physical loads later in life. Experts recommend encouraging children to participate in sports like swimming and running to support both physical and mental development.
