Neuschwanstein Castle showcases 19th-century Historicism

Neuschwanstein Castle, located in Schwangau, stands as a prominent example of 19th-century Historicism. Commissioned by King Ludwig II and begun in 1869, the structure combines white limestone, towers, and detailed murals to create a medieval-style aesthetic.

The castle's design integrates architecture with narratives from legends and musical themes. While the exterior resembles a medieval fortress, the interior reflects the technical and artistic capabilities of its era. The project, based on plans by architect Eduard Riedel and designs by Christian Jank, remains partially uncompleted. As of 2025, the site is part of a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble related to Ludwig II.
