Elderly Scammed by Fake Police Calls in Germany, Austria

A German court in Frankfurt sentenced three members of a fraud ring to six years and four‑and‑a‑half years in prison for orchestrating telephone scams that targeted vulnerable seniors. The scheme involved callers posing as police officers and claiming that the victims' relatives were involved in fatal traffic accidents, demanding large sums of money or valuables as bail.

Similar false‑police scams were reported in Austria’s Burgenland region, where an 80‑year‑old man received a call from someone claiming to be a German police officer. He was told his daughter was detained after a fatal accident and was pressured to hand over jewelry and gold coins as a “caution.” The perpetrators collected the valuables and later faced police investigation. Both incidents illustrate a growing pattern of telephone fraud aimed at elderly individuals across Central Europe.
