Nevada County to host workshop on 2027-2035 housing plan

Nevada County will host a public community workshop on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026, to gather resident input regarding its 2027–2035 Housing Element Update. The session is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Eric Rood Administrative Center in Nevada City.

As part of a state mandate, California cities and counties must maintain a comprehensive general plan. The California Department of Housing and Community Development reviews these plans, which include targets known as the Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA). For unincorporated Nevada County, the 7th-cycle target is 3,712 units, contributing to a total county-wide allocation of 7,055 units.

The update focuses on zoning and land use to ensure sufficient density for multifamily and lower-income housing. County officials clarified that the mandate is limited to zoning and general plan policy; the county does not build the housing itself, as that is the role of private developers, and property owners are not required to construct homes on designated sites.
