Nevada County warns of fraudulent planning invoice scam

Nevada County, California, has issued a warning to planning customers about a fraud scheme in which scammers send emails that appear to come from the county’s Planning Department, using officials’ names and the County Government Center address. The messages direct recipients to wire money to pay fake invoices and are sent from a spoofed address (Planning.coNevadaCounty.ca@usa.gov) that is not a legitimate county email.

County officials state that Nevada County Planning never requests wire‑transfer payments. Residents are advised not to respond, click any links, or send money. Suspicious emails should be forwarded to CDA.Fiscal@nevadacountyca.gov. "Protecting our residents from fraud is a top priority," said Trisha Tillotson, director of the Community Development Agency, which oversees Planning. Invoices can be verified through the Accela Citizen Access portal, and legitimate payments are accepted in person at the agency office or by mail.
