Nevada Lithium Mines Highlight Sustainable Land and Water Practices

The Silver Peak lithium mine in Nevada manages more than 13,000 acres and promotes integrated land, soil and water stewardship alongside mining operations. Its approach includes baseline environmental assessments, ongoing monitoring, reclamation efforts that have improved soil quality by up to 30%, and coordination with local agriculture and forestry.

The Thacker Pass project, also in northern Nevada, is a $2.9 billion investment targeting annual production of 60,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate. The development will affect over 5,000 acres, use about 3,224 megaliters of water per year, and incorporates extensive sustainability measures such as dust control, tailings management, habitat protection and community engagement. Both mines are presented as case studies for responsible mineral extraction that supports the U.S. battery supply chain while mitigating impacts on agriculture, water resources and ecosystems.
