Nevada prepares for 2027 legislative session and education debates

The Nevada Legislature is preparing for its 84th Session, scheduled to convene on February 1, 2027, for a 120-day term. Preparations are already underway through interim committees and bill drafting, with several unresolved issues from the 2025 session expected to return.

Key legislative developments from the previous session include significant changes to corporate law. Assembly Bill 239 clarified that stockholders generally do not owe fiduciary duties to a corporation unless they are a controlling stockholder and allowed corporations to include enforceable jury trial waivers in their articles of incorporation. Additionally, Assembly Bill 3 increased the monetary threshold for the state’s mandatory nonbinding arbitration program from $50,000 to $100,000 per plaintiff.

Education funding is expected to be a central issue during the 2027 session. The state is addressing the financial impacts of a declining public school population, which has led to funding challenges in districts like Clark County. While an emergency funding plan recently averted $51 million in budget cuts and prevented immediate job losses, officials warn that the issue of declining student enrollment will remain a major debate for the upcoming legislature.
