Nevers Mumba exits active politics to serve as statesman
Former Zambian Vice President Nevers Mumba has announced his departure from active partisan politics to transition into a statesman and advisory role. Mumba is stepping down as President of the New Nation Party (NNP), a party he recently rebranded from the MMD. He has also withdrawn from the UPND Alliance Council of Presidents.
Reuben Sambo, the NNP Vice President, will serve as the acting president of the party until a formal convention is held to elect a successor. Mumba stated that his decision is not a permanent retirement from public service but a shift toward offering counsel and guidance through diplomacy and his experience as a statesman.
Mumba expressed a desire to act as a nonpartisan envoy to promote national unity and reconciliation following a divisive election period. He noted that he had briefed President Hakainde Hichilema on his decision, and the President expressed support for his new direction.
