Nevzat Bahtiyar Sentenced to 17 Years for Assisting in Narin Güran Murder

An 8‑year‑old girl, Narin Güran, disappeared on 21 August 2024 in the Tavşantepe area of Diyarbakır, Turkey. Her body was recovered 19 days later in the Eğertutmaz stream. In the ensuing murder trial, her uncle Salim Güran, mother Yüksel Güran and brother Enes Güran were each sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for participating in the killing.

Neighbour Nevzat Bahtiyar, who had confessed to burying the body, was initially sentenced to four years and six months for destroying, hiding or altering evidence. The Turkish Court of Cassation (Yargıtay) reduced that sentence and remanded the case to the Diyarbakır 8th Heavy Penal Court. On 16 April 2026 the court reconvened and sentenced Bahtiyar to 17 years’ imprisonment for "qualified assistance to murder," while maintaining his pre‑trial detention. The Yargıtay Prosecutor’s Office prepared a report confirming the sentence’s legality and requested that the decision be upheld.
