New 9/11 victim identified via forensic DNA genealogy

Authorities in New York have identified a victim of the September 11 attacks nearly 25 years after the event using forensic genetic genealogy. The victim, an adult woman, has been identified through a method that combines DNA testing with genealogical research. Her family has requested that her identity remain confidential.

Medical examiner Jason Graham stated that this represents a “great advancement” in the complex effort to identify victims of the World Trade Center attacks. While approximately 1,100 victims remain unidentified, forensic experts noted that there are 47 DNA profiles that may be compatible with this new genetic genealogy method.
