New Adult literature emerges as a key trend for young readers

The emergence of the ‘New Adult’ literary subgenre is reshaping reading habits among young adults aged 18 to 30. This genre serves as a bridge between Young Adult and adult fiction, focusing on life transitions such as university, entering the workforce, and gaining independence. Unlike Young Adult fiction, which often centers on adolescence, New Adult narratives explore characters making decisions without parental supervision and navigating adult relationships.

Digital platforms, particularly TikTok and its ‘BookTok’ communities, have been instrumental in the genre's growth, providing peer-to-peer recommendations that often outperform traditional marketing. While some critics suggest youth are reading less, data indicates a shift in medium rather than a decline in interest. In Argentina, for instance, reports show that while many adolescents do not read printed texts, more than half engage in digital reading. Youth and children's works remain among the most commercially successful categories at major events like the Buenos Aires International Book Fair.
