New Alzheimer's antibody therapies introduced in Austria
New amyloid antibody therapies, Lecanemab and Donanemab, are being utilized in Austria to treat early-stage Alzheimer's disease. These treatments target amyloid-beta proteins to make them visible to the immune system for removal. While they do not cure the disease, clinical studies indicate they can delay disease progression by several months.
Approximately 150 patients across Austria have been undergoing treatment since late 2025 or early 2026. Neurologist Udo Zifko, head of the Memory Center at Rudolfinerhaus in Vienna, noted that early intervention is critical, as these drugs are only suitable for individuals with mild cognitive impairment or early-stage Alzheimer's. Confirmation of amyloid-beta deposits via PET scans or lumbar puncture is required for eligibility.
Experts emphasize that medical treatment should be balanced with psychosocial support. Stefanie Auer from the University for Continuing Education in Krems highlighted the necessity of research into care models that address the psychosocial needs and abilities of those living with dementia.
