New Amsterdam redevelopment plan targets urban modernization
The Guyanese government has unveiled a comprehensive redevelopment plan for New Amsterdam under the ‘Model Village’ Initiative. The proposal aims to transform the historic township into a cleaner, greener, and more pedestrian-friendly community through significant infrastructure upgrades.
Key components of the plan include the modernization of the New Amsterdam Municipal Market into an organized complex and the transformation of the old Stelling into a waterfront boardwalk featuring restaurants and entertainment. The initiative also seeks to establish New Amsterdam as a tourism destination by leveraging existing infrastructure like the Palmyra Stadium and the Athletic Track.
To improve quality of life and public health, the plan proposes creating more green spaces, parks, and a ‘health box’—a walk-in unit for monitoring blood pressure and blood sugar. Other planned improvements include upgraded roads, enhanced drainage, expanded security camera coverage, fire hydrants, and the relocation of heavy traffic away from residential areas to create a more livable environment.
