New ankle implant offers non-drug treatment for urinary incontinence
A new medical device consisting of a small implant placed on the inner side of the ankle offers a potential solution for urge urinary incontinence. According to Professor Angelos Liapis, an emeritus professor at the University of Athens and specialist in urogynecology, the procedure takes approximately 25 minutes under local anesthesia and boasts an 80% success rate.
The device works by stimulating the tibial nerve, which influences the neural circuits that control the bladder. This stimulation aims to limit involuntary bladder contractions that cause sudden, intense urges to urinate and subsequent urine loss.
The method has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is currently utilized in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. Professor Liapis expressed hope that the treatment will soon become available in Greece.
Urinary incontinence affects approximately 27% to 28% of the female population, impacting quality of life from adolescence through old age, with increased prevalence after age 70. The condition is often exacerbated by menopause due to declining estrogen levels.
