New automated techniques aim to improve blood pressure measurement accuracy
Researchers at the Menzies Institute of Medical Research, University of Tasmania, led by Professor James Sharman, are developing automated office blood pressure (AOBP) devices that take multiple readings while the patient rests and average the results. The initiative seeks to increase diagnostic precision for hypertension, a major global health risk linked to heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease and dementia. AOBP machines automate cuff inflation and measurement, reducing errors caused by brief doctor visits and limited resources.
In Argentina, pharmacy chain Farmacias Global advises patients on proper blood pressure measurement practices: rest for at least five minutes, avoid caffeine, smoking and strenuous activity beforehand, empty the bladder, sit with back supported and feet flat, keep the arm at heart level, use an appropriately sized cuff, stay still and silent during the reading, and repeat measurements to obtain an average. Accurate measurement is crucial because hypertension often presents no symptoms but significantly raises the risk of cardiovascular events.
